It was enough to have had the incredible opportunity to travel our great Commonwealth and meet so many incredible people from every corner of Virginia.
But our journey didn’t end there.
On a beautiful Saturday in May 2008, thousands of grassroots Republicans voted for bold, new leadership for our Party.
We had the opportunity to reform the GOP in Virginia and turn it into a people-centered organization (not power-centered), run from the bottom up.
However, about 11 months later, the GOP establishment who so strongly opposed my election as chairman convinced a handful of party insiders to remove me from that position in an effort to preserve the status quo and the top-down structure they so depended on.
Obviously, there were a lot of lessons in the whole chairmanship debacle, but one that stands out is that if we are going to succeed with our ideas in making our communities, Commonwealth, and country a better place to live, work, and raise a family, we must put people and principles first, before party and pursuits of power.
